This World CML Day, join us in ensuring we build bridges, so that no patient is left behind.
Find out more about what World CML Day is, this year’s theme, the focus of the iCMLf and how you can get involved.
What is World CML Day 2024?
World CML Day 2024, observed on September 22nd, is a global day of unity and advocacy dedicated to raising awareness for Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML). The symbolic date, 22/9, reflects the Philadelphia chromosome, the genetic abnormality (the translocation between chromosomes 9 and 22) that causes CML.
Why is World CML Day 2024 important?
CML is a life-altering condition, and access to effective diagnostics, treatment and care can make the difference between thriving and struggling with the disease. The 2024 World CML Day campaign shines a light on the disparities that still exist in access to CML care. For many individuals and communities around the world, obstacles such as late diagnosis, inadequate treatment, and limited support remain significant challenges.
This year’s theme, Building Bridges, Leave No Patient Behind is integral to everything the iCMLf stands for and aims to achieve. It reflects the need for collaboration across borders, healthcare systems, and communities to overcome these barriers. By focusing on improving early detection, access to the latest treatments, and addressing the specific needs of each patient, we can create a future where everyone living with CML has an equal chance to lead a healthy, fulfilling life.
How does Building Bridges benefit the CML community?
Building Bridges means uniting all parts of the CML ecosystem to work together for the common good. For patients, it means being part of a global network where support is readily available, information is shared openly, and there is collective strength in numbers. For healthcare professionals, it means access to shared knowledge and resources that enhance their ability to deliver the best care possible. For researchers, it means collaboration across institutions and borders to push the boundaries of what is possible in CML treatment.
By building these bridges, we are creating pathways to:
- Early detection: Ensuring that all patients, regardless of location, have access to the necessary tests for early and accurate diagnosis.
- Comprehensive care: Ensuring that the best possible treatment is available to all, with a focus on the individual needs of patients across diverse communities.
- Holistic support: Addressing the emotional, social, and practical needs of patients and their families, ensuring that no one faces CML alone.
What is the iCMLf doing for World CML Day?
At the iCMLf, our mission is to foster international collaboration that helps bridge the gaps in CML care. By partnering with healthcare professionals, researchers, patient advocacy groups, and communities, we work to ensure that the latest advancements in CML treatment reach every patient, everywhere.
This year, for World CML Day, we’re working with local hematology societies in the Philippines, Bangladesh, Kenya and Brazil to co-host a series of CML meetings and discussions. Through these, and all of our initiatives, we aim to:
- Support education and awareness campaigns to promote early diagnosis and effective treatment.
- Encourage knowledge-sharing among clinicians to improve the quality of care.
- Advocate for equitable access to diagnostic tools, therapies, and patient support services.
- Listen to and amplify the voices of patients to ensure their needs are addressed and heard.
