ValentinAs we eagerly anticipate the launch of our upcoming Knowledge Centre module, 'Next Steps in CML Management,' with the first in a series of topics scheduled for release in May, we turn to Dr. Valentin Garcia Gutierrez, module co-chair, for insights into why these topics  are pivotal for global CML knowledge, the profound impact of the iCMLf, and how the Knowledge Centre fosters equity in CML patient care worldwide.

The iCMLf Knowledge Centre: Next Steps in CML Management

“As a long-time participant in the iCMLf, I have witnessed first-hand the transformative impact of collaborative efforts in advancing the management of CML worldwide. My journey with iCMLf began several years ago when Professor Tim Hughes reached out to me, inviting me to contribute to the TFR program. I was happy to collaborate with the Foundation because I thought, and still think, the iCMLf is doing a wonderful job.

“The iCMLf has been instrumental in fostering connections among physicians globally. Through initiatives like the TFR program and engagements at major conferences such as ASH, EHA, and others, we have forged bonds with colleagues from diverse backgrounds. This exchange of ideas is invaluable, as it exposes us to varying challenges faced by physicians in different regions. Understanding these challenges is crucial, as it enables us to work towards a common goal: ensuring equitable access to high-quality care for all CML patients worldwide.

“Through involvement with the iCMLf, and collaborating with experts from around the world, I have gained insights into novel approaches to CML management and witnessed the resilience of healthcare professionals in resource-limited settings. This shared knowledge has not only enriched my practice but also reaffirmed my commitment to advancing CML care on a global scale.

“The launch of the Knowledge Centre marked a significant milestone in efforts to provide equal access to CML expertise. The online platform serves as a repository of cutting-edge research, curated by leading experts in the field. For physicians in regions where specialised training opportunities are limited, the Knowledge Centre is a vital resource, offering access to presentations and updates from renowned clinicians and researchers. Moreover, it facilitates interdisciplinary learning, bridging the gap between hematologists specialising in various malignancies.

“The module I have been working on focuses on emerging therapies and treatment paradigms in CML. By spotlighting investigational drugs and innovative approaches, we aim to provide clinicians with insights into the future landscape of CML management. From combination therapies to novel agents, the module will offer a comprehensive overview of the evolving treatment landscape, empowering physicians to make informed decisions tailored to their patients' needs. There is still a lot of room for improvement in CML management and we want to evidence the wealth of work and investigation going on in the field.

“Our ultimate goal with this module is to underscore the dynamic nature of CML research and highlight the ongoing pursuit of improved outcomes for patients. By showcasing the breadth of ongoing research initiatives, we hope to inspire clinicians to engage actively in advancing the field and contribute to the collective effort to transform CML care globally.

“I invite fellow clinicians to join us in this endeavor, leveraging the resources offered by the iCMLf to enhance their practice and contribute to the advancement of CML research and treatment.

“Together, we can make a difference in the lives of CML patients worldwide.”

Dr Valentin Garcia Gutierrez PhD serves on the faculty of the Department of Hematology and Hematherapy at the Hospital Universitario Ramon y Cajal, Universidad de Alcala, in Madrid, Spain. He will co-chair ‘Next Steps in CML Management’ alongside Professor Qian Jiang from Bejing, China.
